Who
We Are
The
Family Health Centers is a group practice that strives
to provide excellent primary health care to residents
of the Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Madison, and surrounding
counties in Western North Carolina. Offices are located
in Arden, Asheville, and Hominy Valley, and each location
has 5 or more health care providers to allow patients
with urgent problems to be seen in a timely fashion.
Routine care is managed by a primary provider. One office
is open on weekends to provide urgent care, decreasing
the need for emergency room visits for non-emergent
problems.
Services our
family doctors provide include complete physical exams
and health maintenance, management of acute and chronic
illnesses, children's health care, PAP smears and colposcopy
if needed for abnormal PAP smears, bone densitometry
to diagnose and follow osteoporosis, flexible sigmoidoscopy
screening for colon cancer, pulmonary function testing,
skin surgery, dietary instruction, laboratory, X-ray,
and urgent care. Most of our physicians and a physician
extender also care for hospitalized patients at Mission
+ St. Joseph's on a rotating basis, and some provide
nursing home care.

Statement
The
Family Health Centers are a network of family centered
primary care health care providers for Buncombe County
and the surrounding areas. The Family Health Centers
are dedicated to providing easy access to high quality
acute, preventive, comprehensive family and occupational
health care services. These services will be cost efficient,
compassionate, and respectful.
We are dedicated
to providing staff with opportunities for professional
development, competitive salaries, profit sharing, and
gratifying work environment. The Family Health Centers
will remain competitive in the primary health care marketplace.
Our
History
The
Family Health Centers was established by E. Bruce Elliston
in 1978 and first incorporated in February of 1979.
His vision of providing quality medical care to our
patients and community has made this practice one of
the largest corporations of Family Practice Physicians
in the state of North Carolina.
As the practice
continued to grow, a larger facility was necessary.
Work began in 1985 on the present building at 206 Asheland
Avenue and the practice moved to this location in August
of 1986. The office recently expanded to 2 floors and
has 7 practicing physicians, 1 physician assistant and
1 family nurse practitioner.
In August of
1993, the practice established another office in the
Candler area. Hominy Valley Family Health Center currently
has 5 Physicians and 1 Physician Assistant. The office
is located at 1219 Smoky Park Highway.
In January
of 1994, Arden Family Health Center was established
at 2161 Hendersonville Highway in Arden. This facility
has 5 practicing Physicians.
Many of the
services offered by The Family Health Centers have been
centralized for our patients’ convenience. The
Asheland Avenue office offers x-ray and bone densitometry,
physical therapy and a state of the art laboratory.
We have a Telephone Triage department made up of 2 LPN’s
and 1 RN, as well as centralized scheduling and referrals.
The phone system has been automated for patient convenience.
The Family
Health Centers provides 24-hour care to our patients
by having an on-call physician. Our normal office hours
are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. We offer
Saturday hours for acute illnesses.
